Estimation of Arterial Stiffness by using PPG Signal: A Review
نویسنده
چکیده
Arterial stiffness leads to cardiac disorders, the degree of arterial stiffness can be obtained by calculating the augmentation index, arterial stiffness index and reflection index of a pulse wave. Three different algorithms can be used to determine the above indices i.e. finding local and global maxima and minima by slope gradient method, zero-crossing point identification and intersecting tangents. Thus by calculating the augmentation index, arterial stiffness index and reflection index the degree of arterial stiffness can be calculated by which cardiac risk of a patient can be diagnosed. All three indices can determined by implementing an algorithm in MATLAB. In this paper we have discussed various methods to analyse and estimate the arterial stiffness parameters and software tools available for analysis. Keywords— Cardiac risk, PPG, Augmentation index

Arterial stiffness index is one of the biomechanical indices of vascular healthiness. These indexes are based on detailed pulse waveform analysis which is presented here. After photoplethysmographyic (PPG) pulse wave measurement, we decompose the pulse waveform for the estimation and determination of arterial elasticity. Firstly, it is electro-optically measured PPG signal and by electromechani...
متن کاملPhotoplethysmographic signal waveform index for detection of increased arterial stiffness.
The aim of this research was to assess the validity of the photoplethysmographic (PPG) waveform index PPGAI for the estimation of increased arterial stiffness. For this purpose, PPG signals were recorded from 24 healthy subjects and from 20 type II diabetes patients. The recorded PPG signals were processed with the analysis algorithm developed and the waveform index PPGAI similar to the augment...

Ancient Indian Ayurveda has used the palpation of the pulse at the wrist under the thumb to analyze physical health. In the nineteenth century, analysis of the contour of the peripheral pulse to assess arterial properties was first described. With the recognition of the importance of arterial stiffness there has been a resurrection of interest in pulse wave analysis. The non-invasive evaluation...
متن کاملVirtual Instrumentation based Non-Invasive Assessment of Arterial Stiffness Using Finger Photoplethysmographic Signal
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is currently the biggest single cause of mortality in the world; hence, the early detection of its onset is vital for effective prevention therapies. Arterial Stiffness (AS) has proved to be a direct indicator for CVD. In this study, a non-invasivemethod for assessing AS using Finger Photoplethysmographic (PPG) Signal is proposed. Virtual Instrumentation(VI) softwar...
متن کاملAging Index using Photoplethysmography for a Healthcare Device: Comparison with Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity
OBJECTIVES Recent studies have emphasized the potential information embedded in peripheral fingertip photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals for the assessment of arterial wall stiffening during aging. For the discrimination of arterial stiffness with age, the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) has been widely used in clinical applications. The second derivative of the PPG (acceleration photop...
